  • The Benefits and Uses of Stick and Coil Nails

Manasquan Fasteners offers a full line of collated nails to work with the most popular pneumatic nail gun brands. We offer coil and stick/strip nails in a variety of materials, angles, and collation types.

Stick nails are rigid strips held together by plastic, paper, or adhesive. Coil nails are collated in a spiral pattern. They’re ideal for higher-volume nailing and provide a higher capacity per load than stick nails.

If you choose stick nails, keep in mind:

    • Collation Type: Plastic, paper, wire, or adhesive
    • Degree or Collation Angle: Can range from 0° to 35°
    • Head Type: Use full round heads for maximum holding; clipped heads for higher capacity
  • The Manasquan Fasteners Difference

At Manasquan Fasteners, we carry only high-quality collated stainless nails built for serious performance, especially in demanding environments. The products we carry meet industry standards. Additionally, our stainless options, especially our Type 316 nails, are trusted by professionals working in coastal and high-moisture conditions.

In addition to our nails for nail guns, we offer other fastener types that include:

  • Additional Considerations for Collated Nail Guns

Collated nails are divided into two basic categories: Stick/Strip Nails and Coil Nails. When selecting the proper stick nail to fit your nailer, you should consider the five basic factors discussed below.

    Stick/Strip Nails

Stick nails, also known as strip nails, are collated or fastened together into a rigid strip. When selecting the proper stick nail to fit your nailer, consider the following factors.

Method of Collation: The method of collation may be by plastic strips, paper strips, thin wire, or tape/adhesive.

    1. Plastic Strip: These nails have a large head, are durable, and are resistant to water damage. The plastic prevents deterioration due to high humidity and inclement weather. Strip nails are convenient for a variety of projects, and strip nailers are lighter than coil nailers. This allows for installation with less fatigue, which is convenient for jobs requiring one to hold the nail gun overhead.
    2. Paper strip: These have a higher load capacity than plastic strips, as they are arranged into larger strips, thereby increasing installation efficiency. They also do not create the plastic debris that plastic strip nails produce during installation. To note, these nails are relatively delicate and sensitive to moisture. Store in a dry location.
    3. Adhesive: Used for finish (brad) nails with straight collation. Brads are neat, safe, and easy to use. They may have "T" or "D" shaped heads. Please note: Be sure your nails are stored in a dry area. While these nails are efficient and reliable, they need to be stored properly as the adhesive collation is relatively delicate.
    4. Degree or angle of collation: The degree of collation may range from 0° (flat angle) to 35°.
    5. Head type: The head type may be either full round or clipped. Clipped head nails have a crescent-shaped piece removed to allow them to be packed together more tightly. While this allows more nails per strip, many areas of the country, specifically the earthquake-prone West Coast and hurricane-affected areas like Florida, have building codes that do not allow clipped heads.

    Coil Nails

Coil nails are generally welded to a thin wire and always have a full round head. Normally attached at a 15° angle, these nails are then rolled into coils. Coils contain 150-250 nails, depending on the variety. Coils enable efficient installation without requiring frequent reloading. The circular design of the coil allows for quick firing while minimizing jams. This style of nail collation is popular for roofing and siding. Coil nails may also be collated with plastic. These can be specially ordered for you if needed.

When matching both coil and strip nails to a corresponding gun, consider the factors above and also understand the length and gauge limitations for the specific nailer you are working with.
